Traveling with Dexter

Lessons from a family trip from Ottawa to Aruba

If you're heading south with the family this winter, perhaps my experience can save you a headache.

Lesson 1 - Flight times matter:  Thinking that arriving earlier would be better, I booked a flight at 6 am out of Ottawa putting us in Aruba at our hotel 10 hours later (after a stopover and transfer time).  Of course that meant getting up at 4 am.   By 10 am, we were all zonked.  The excitement kept Dex awake and my husband and I hard at work entertaining.

On the way home 2 weeks later, we left at a reasonable 12 pm and arrived home late that evening yes, Dexter was tired, but at least we were reasonably rested and thus able to cope with all his adorable demands.

Future plans:  Schedule flights so parents are reasonably rested and better able to deal with unexpected and expected travel issues.

Lesson 2 - Buying a seat for an infant:  This is a bit of a hard one for most of us as spending that extra cash can be prohibitive.  However, safety experts suggest that the safest place for your child on a plane is in a car seat (also check out www.kidsflysafe.com for a lighter weight approved safety device =96 I got this for our next trip!).

We did not purchase a seat for Dex on this trip.  In the future, we would certainly like to.  On the way there, we used the Baby B'Air which is a vest that the infant/toddler wears and that attaches to the parent's seat belt.  It is approved for use in flight by the FAA.  I got mine (very gently used once) on eBay.

On the way home, Dexter had his own seat as there was room on the plane.  He sat comfortably in his car seat and read books, watched DVDs, dozed (for a few quiet minutes) and snacked.  What a difference!  Not only did we know he was safer, but we had a little space to ourselves.  I think I even got to read one magazine article.

Future plans:   Book a seat for an infant; it may cost more, but we'd rather travel less and feel better about the voyage.

Lesson 3 - Comfort toys:  I've said it before, I'll say it again.  I love the Doudou et compagnie mini bear with handkerchief that Dex keeps in his crib.    Whenever I wanted him to nap on the flight, I brought out Doudou (one of the two I brought in case of drops, spills, vomit =96 yes, that happened).  It didn't always work, but at least he relaxed a bit (and so did I!).

Future plans:  Bring 3 Doudous!!

Lesson 4 - Routine:  We're told over and over again that children love routine.  The first few days in a new environment were tougher for Dex.  He didn't nap well and he had trouble falling asleep.  Within about 3 days of keeping him on his regular schedule, he was back to his usual self; sleeping well at both naptime and during the night.  We scheduled our activities around his schedule.  It kept all of us happier when Dex is in a good mood; mama and dada are in a good mood!

Future plans:  Stick to routine (yay =96 one thing we did right!!)
